Resumen
This research describes and determines the way in which extracurricular activities benefits the oral production in English of students in a Colombian public educational institution. A teacher with a degree in Spanish and English, who works in the public sector and 35 students voluntarily participated in this study by answering a semi-structured interview, two surveys, and an oral test to collect information. This research has a critical-social and action-research approach, because, as stated by Gutiérrez (2014), this approach focuses its interest on change and social transformation in the classroom. Likewise, action research allows dealing with a specific problem and population that requires a solution. Therefore, the data of this study were analyzed in a mixed way through content analysis and tabulation of responses. The results reveal that the students do not have self-confidence or motivation towards English, which does not allow the abilities they have. Likewise, extracurricular activities allow creating a pleasant and comfortable space, where students should only focus on strengthening their oral production in English as a foreign language.
