Resumen
One way to treat malocclusions at an early age is by means of functional orthopedic devices, which are bimaxillary anchorage and do not depend exclusively on dental support, they are made up mostly of an acrylic body that is in direct contact with the hard palate, protrusion springs, retention hooks, expansion screws, upper and lower vestibular arches of the Bimler, Eschler or Hawley type, among others. Removable orthopedic appliances with acrylic palate are widely used in the treatment of malocclusions and bone discrepancies in children under 12 years of age. In the literature it has been found that appliances can influence articulation failure of sound production causing dyslalias; these can have varying degrees of severity in speech sound disturbances; resulting in communication failures. A bibliographic review was carried out in Spanish and English, between the years 2010 to 2020, in various sources of digital information and bibliographic databases such as Science direct, Pubmed, Cochrane library, Proquest and the academic Google search engine, in which the advanced search strategy. The present analysis covered 56 publications from the years 2012 to 2018, about the speech disturbances in patients under 12 years old treated with appliances containing acrylic palate. Based on the literature review, it can be affirmed that when using this type of orthopedic device during early treatment, several phonemes can be altered, where several authors affirm that reducing acrylic on the palate could reduce these alterations as long as there is a good adaptation and a follow-up by the stages.
