This paper presents the results of the research project “Epistemological beliefs and positive experiences in mathematics”, funded by the Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas. This research aimed at exploring the epistemological beliefs on mathematics held by eighth grade students (between 13 and 14 years of age) from Cuban middle school. The authors used Antoni Vila and María L. Callejo’s (2003) questionnaire with the adaptations required by the research context. We also designed group work situations as a proyective tool for the triangulation of acquired data. The interpretation of the results suggested that the that the beliefs system of the subjects is influenced by negative experiences associated with reiterative periods of failure to understand mathematics; lack of abilities for the integration of mathematical knowledge and properties; partial or complete lack of relation between mathematics and daily life; and extrinsic motivation for mathematics. All these elements interfere in the construction of positive significations of mathematics.
