The purpose of this study was to determine how pain management is postoperative period by the nursing professional in the hospitalization services of some IPS from the city of Santa Marta. It is a quantitative research and corresponds to a cross-sectional descriptive study, where the instrument used for the collection of the information was a semi-structured instrument carried out by researchers. As results were found that participants know the analogical (VAS) and verbal visual scales to assess the pain, but some claim that the service does not use it or there are no such scales. 72% of the nurses make the assessment and registration of the pain in the note of nursing, and only 28% do not. 81% of the nurses in the clinics know that the measurement scales allow to assess pain intensity and 3% does not know / does not respond. In the use of pharmacological measures for the management of postoperative pain by the Nursing professionals from some IPS in Santa Marta, the vast majority use NSAIDS as a pharmacological measure. One of the relevant data of the study allows to identify that 72% of the nurses surveyed make the assessment and registration of the pain in the note of nursing versus 28% that does not make it difficult in this way the management of pain by of the multidisciplinary team. Finally, it is recommended that nursing professionals should use the pain assessment scales in the IPS hospitalization service object of study.
