Resumen
Law 266 of 1996, which established the professionalization of nursing, defines nursing as "... a liberal profession and a discipline of a social nature, whose subjects of attention are the person, the family and the community, with their sociocultural characteristics, their needs and rights, as well as the physical and social environment that influences health and well-being. In other words, nursing is responsible for the care of the human being, on which there is a great effort of the discipline to broaden its conception. At present, the holistic vision is promoted, for integral attention, specifying in different moments of the life cycle and attending to the different modalities of the human: individual, family and community. However, its practical development depends on historical, social, political and cultural circumstances, which make the practice of the profession vary from one place to another.
