The objective of the research study was to determine the reasons for achievement, cognition, and affiliation that lead students of the psychology program of the Colombian Cooperativa Universidad de Bogotá to commit academic fraud and analyze the relationship of this behavior with its locus of control. . It was based on the paradigm of complexity, applying a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview; In parallel, a group of students was interviewed to delve into some facts. It was found that academic fraud is a social practice frequently used by students, allowing and admitting within their group context, motivated by the need for achievement, associated with affiliation. Finally, the motivation for cognition was found since the students are not interested in meaningful learning. It is observed that there is no direct relationship between the use of academic fraud and the locus of external control. Higher percentages of explanation of illegal behaviors are presented, from the deficiency and / or lack of skills, while an explanation of legal behavior from an external perspective is given. Finally, lines of research aimed at solving questions that arise from the present study are proposed.
