In the dog, myxomatous valvular degeneration (MVD) is a pathology of high casuistry in veterinary clinics that has a predilection for dogs of small breeds, geriatric and for some breeds such as the King Charles Spaniel Cavalier, poodle, shih tzu and dachshund. MVD usually results in heart failure (HF). Because of its high casuistry in veterinary clinics it is very important to know the generalities of this condition such as its prevalence, etiology, physiopathology and symptoms; in addition to the use of different diagnostic tests such as Doppler echocardiography, chest x-ray, electrocardiogram and phonocardiogram in the clinic of these patients in order to be able to determine an early diagnosis, to classify in which stage the patient is according to the functional classification of the patient. New York Heart Association (NYHA) and this be able to establish the best possible treatment that will prolong the life of the patient, for this reason it is important to carry out more research in the area of pharmacological treatment that allows to determine better therapeutic alternatives. Currently, the treatment of HF is aimed at inhibiting the neurohormonal responses that the body acts as compensatory systems and that over time aggravate the picture. The objective of this article is to compile current trends in diagnosis and treatment of MVD.
