Resumen
Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality from chronic diseases worldwide, in addition these patients come to present emotional alterations such as anxiety and depression that lead to a great burden of the disease, associated with physical disability, decreased quality of life and greater use of health services. Objective: to identify the emotional alterations of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Methodology: a quantitative study with a narrative review design was carried out, consisting of articles in Spanish and English available from institutional and open databases. The information of the articles that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria was collected in a database of the Microsoft EXCEL program. Results: 40 articles were included. Most of the participants were male (51.8% and 95%), they were between 52.5 and 73.9 years old, 29.4% and 57% completed university studies, the majority of the people were pensioners and unemployed by 52.9% and 93%. The participants in some studies were white (62% and 92.4%). Emotional disturbances such as depression (5.2% and 74.6%), anxiety (2% to 100%) and panic (2.2% to 73%) were found in COPD patients. Conclusions: this study allowed us to identify that anxiety and depression are alterations that have a direct impact on the clinical symptoms of COPD, worsening their state of health and generating poor interpersonal relationships, a lack of adequate coping with the disease, a dependence on the family member due to little or no knowledge about the disease process.
