Resumen
Introduction: Halitosis is defined as an unpleasant odor emanating from the mouth, it is commonly caused by the release of volatile sulfur compounds that occurs due to the metabolic product of bacteria, the most frequent causes are poor oral hygiene, periodontal diseases, among other This pathology can compromise and affect the social environment. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and level of halitosis to generate scientific evidence for decision-making and relate it to prevention and timely care in the health area. Methodology: In this study a quantitative / descriptive method was used, the sample was 80 adolescents from 13 to 18 years old, by means of the halimeter device an expiration was performed for 10 seconds, the value shown indicates the level, these data were collected and analyzed in the database where it allowed us to find representative results. Results: The data indicated that the prevalence of halitosis in the population was 90%, while the other 10% did not suffer from it. Likewise, a higher percentage is evidenced in level 2, which is a slight odor in 40%, followed by level 1, which is a barely detectable odor in 36%. Conclusions: There is a higher prevalence of halitosis in adolescence, it ranges between the ages of 13 and 14 years, to a lesser extent 18 years; This suggests that as age progresses there is a lower prevalence of presenting halitosis.
