Resumen
Introduction: Prostate pathologies in non-castrated male canines are more frequent and prevalent every day. The main alterations have been described (benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis, prostatomegaly, cysts, squamous metaplasia, neoplasms, and prostatic obsessives). Therefore, new alternatives are required for the early diagnosis of these conditions. The use of serum biomarkers found in the surrounding environment could be a solution. Problem: In Brazil, studies have been carried out that measure serum levels of prostate acid phosphatase (PAP) in canines. The increase or decrease of these values suggests the presence or absence of alterations in the canine prostate gland. However, in Colombia, there are no studies that determine the levels of PAP in canines. Objective: The determination of the serum levels of PAP and its correlation with prostate pathologies in canines diagnosed by ultrasonography in the metropolitan area of Bucaramanga. Methodology: Four zones of the metropolitan area of Bucaramanga (Piedecuesta, Girón, Floridablanca and Bucaramanga) were studied. A total of 53 canines were evaluated through an ultrasound examination. Blood samples were taken, and the canines' sera were analyzed using a commercial kit for acid phosphatase from Biosystems laboratories. Serum levels of PAP were determined. Results: The mean values of PAP in serum were 2.58 u/l, and no correlation (P> 0.005) was found between PAP and the presence of prostate pathologies in canines. Conclusions: With these observed results, an increase or decrease in FAP values cannot be suggested as a useful biomarker for diagnosing prosthetic pathologies in canines. Ultrasonography should be used, and a new biomarker or other test is sought to confirm the findings observed by ultrasound examination in canines from the metropolitan area and Colombia.
