Resumen
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), each year 2.6 million deaths are caused by 134 million events related to unsafe attention in middle- and lower-income countries. The first study which evidenced the safety issue was the IBEAS (2008) study; this study showed how in Latin America, on average, 1 out of 10 hospitalized patients suffer from an unwanted safety event. This proposal intends to study the behavior of safety protocols: organizational learning and continuous improvement of safety practices at a level 4 private IPS (Institución Prestadora de Servicios de Salud – Health Services Provider) in Pereira, Colombia, during 2020, for it has been presented in several studies that although health institutions generate different and diverse improvement plans, there is not appropriate monitoring for a later assessment of their efficacy, causing the organization’s employees to perceive no positive changes in patient safety whatsoever. On this proposal, 4 steps suggested by Massoud et al. (2009) will be implemented: identification of the problem, analysis, hypothesis about changes that might solve the problem, and the learning and improvement cycle. In accordance with what was mentioned before, Ortiz & Esandi (2004) mention that an institution is believed to have a proactive safety culture when the personnel, especially leaders, are highly committed to discussing, learning from errors, and the improvement of patient safety.
