Resumen
Mastitis is caused by infectious agents that cause the inflammatory reaction of the mammary gland. This pathology is relevant due to the great economic losses in dairy production systems. The presentation of mastitis can be clinical or subclinical and depending on this factor there is damage to the breast tissue that can be caused by toxin-producing bacteria or other pathogens capable of breaking the blood-milk barrier, leading to the migration of somatic cells and polymorphonuclear neutrophils to the gland. In view of the fatal damage caused by mastitis, diagnostic methods are paramount. Among the detection methods we can find a great variety of laboratory, field or chemical tests, such as the electrical conductivity test of milk, physics with the use of dark background paddles, biological tests with the use of the California mastitis test, tests in cultures, and with electronic methods such as the DeLaval cell counter, are among other methods described. An accurate diagnosis that allows to install the use of antimicrobials, anti-inflammatories and principles of alternative therapeutic plans and other useful treatments to combat mastitis. With this review, we seek to group updated information regarding mastitis in bovines, its diagnostic methods and therapy.
