Equine reproduction is currently one of the most recognized productive systems for its profitability that is why it is very important to know why mares are not capable of causing complete estrous cycles during the corresponding days and of sustaining a pregnancy without any problem. . This article describes the differences between fertility, infertility and subfertility, in addition to mentioning the factors that lead to subfertility in mares, why they occur, how they occur and the strategies to take for each situation. Among these factors we have intrinsic and extrinsic because the reproductive process depends on several links for it to take place. Emphasis is made at the metabolic, physiological, nutritional, environmental (management and photoperiod) and infectious levels and of course on the support tools for their solution.
