Introduction: There are different alterations of the stomatognathic system of multifactorial origin where the disorders of the temporomandibular joint are found; In the literature reports, joint pain and noise are more frequent in the adult population, they are also observed in adolescents and children, which constitutes a great challenge for their diagnosis and treatment. Objective: To determine through a bibliographic review the frequency of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders in adults during the years 2005 to 2020 Materials and method: A narrative monograph was carried out where a bibliographic review, compilation and search was carried out in the databases from MEDLINE / PubMed, SCOPUS, DIALNET, REPOSITORIO INSTITUCIONAL UCC, SCIELO and GOOGLE ACADEMIC. These included articles are those that assessed the signs and symptoms of TMD in adults aged 20 years or older; no language restrictions. using the following equation "Temporomandibular joint disorders" OR "temporomandibular" AND "joint" AND "Disorders" OR "Signs and Symptoms of the temporomandibular joint" AND "age" OR "age". During the years 2005 to 2020 Results: The frequency of signs and / or symptoms of temporomandibular disorders obtained was 89%. The symptom with the highest prevalence was pain with 53%, followed by joint noise with 42% and deviation in the opening with 21%. The symptom with the lowest prevalence was the opening limitation with 11%. Conclusion: The prevalence of signs and symptoms increases with age, finding significant differences between the different age groups. There are differences in the prevalence of signs and / or symptoms of temporomandibular disorders by sex.
