Resumen
Background. Oral diseases such as tooth decay, periodontal disease and gingivitis are caused by dental biofilm. Currently, natural based oral care products are easily available to control dental biofilm formation. Objective: To compare the antimicrobial activity of a hydroalcoholic extract of propolis and a mouthwash based on Cetylpyridinium Chloride on S. mutans cultures. Materials and methods: Two experimental groups were evaluated: a) Hydroalcoholic extract of propolis and b) a commercial Cetylpyridinium Chloride mouthwash. Zone inhibition tests for 24 hours, proliferation based on colony forming units (CFU) and growth curves every 20 minutes for 18 hours were obtained. Results: The minimum inhibitory concentration of the hydroalcoholic extract of propolis was 5% and a 7.5mm inhibition zone, which corresponds to 44.1% of the positive control, was observed. Ethanolic extract of propolis showed a 10% inhibitory effect after 2h on the S. mutans growth curve. Conclusions: Ethanolic extract propolis (5%) produced 98.6% inhibition and a concentration of 7% demonstrated a bactericidal effect.
