The objective was to describe the cognitive distortions in the cycle of violence by male abusers deprived of their freedom. A qualitative, phenomenological study was carried out with a sample of 90 male abusers deprived of their liberty, who acknowledged having exercised marital violence. We used a semi-structured interview that was analyzed using the theoretical model of Beck and Walker, by means of axial and open coding. The results show that the cognitive distortions that prevail are; the bias of justification, minimization, victimization and blame, related to the cycle of violence and associated with the role of gender. As an emergent result, cognitive biases are associated with the types of violence mainly psychological, physical and lethal.
