Resumen
The environmental education (EE) must be perceived from familiar and school spaces in an articulated, relevant and contextualized way. The goal that led this research was to evaluate the influence of an environmental culture formation through the method ABP (Learning based on problems), specifically, on recycling practices done by each family. We elaborated this study from the perspective of a socio-critical design and with a qualitative approach for families living in the urban area of San Joaquin, town of Santander, Colombia. The families involved come from a group of students between 9 and 11 years old of 4th and 5th grade attending at Maria Auxiliadora School. The thematic aspects that took place in this study were focused on recycling, the 3 recycling R’s, trash management and the cleaning of outdoors areas. The results show that the students transcended in their environmental culture within their familiar surroundings, setting in that way, the behaviors and the making of right decisions towards the recycling practices in a meaningful and favorable way in order to improve the quality of the environment. To conclude, the environmental education gets stronger within families when the school establishes and executes reflexive and methodological proposals. At the same time, members of the education community have to embrace the students and directed them to study of the environmental problems from a local context. Therefore, leading by this method, students will be able to build and transform settled habits that are needed to achieve the conservation of the environment and the nature.
