This study presents the results of a pedagogical proposal implemented with first semester students of the Licenciatura en Lengua Castellana e Inglés in which new alternatives were used to reinforce and expand their vocabulary and thus raise their level of communicative competence in an L2. This is a qualitative research of action research, carried out with a population of 81 students belonging to the first semester, from which a random sample of 9 participants was taken. For the diagnosis, a vocabulary test was applied that showed the low lexical level that the students possessed. In order to strengthen the acquisition of lexicon, pedagogical workshops based on the lexical approach, Schmitt's strategies and Ramos' activities were implemented and the impact of these on these students was analyzed. The results showed that the knowledge of new strategies and activities provided the participants with tools that allow them to recognize how words or phrases can be formed, how to acquire new vocabulary and how to reinforce another on their own.
