The first years of life play an important role in physical, psychological, social and cognitive development, the latter is related to the knowledge that the child acquires through experience and learning through subdomains such as attention, memory, language, executive functions and intelligence that are implicit in each school stage. The objective of this review article was to explore, know and describe the evidence about cognitive processes in preschool and school children. The method was a systematic review in the Redalyc, Science direct and Scopus databases and in online search engines such as Google Scholar between the years 2015-2020. This article concludes that cognitive development is the fundamental basis in the learning process and school, which will have negative or positive effects in later years or on the academic and professional success of each person.
