Resumen
Executive functions have been conceptualized as skills or abilities, directed from the brain and materialized in daily actions by the human being in academic, work and emotional performance. Hence the importance of its proper functioning, development and stimulation in key stages of life such as adolescence. This article is part of a research study with a qualitative approach and descriptive non-experimental design, which is aimed at identifying and characterizing the difficulties of executive functions in ninth grade students of a Colombian public educational institution. The data collection techniques used were surveys and interviews, where students, teachers and parents participated. The information was systematized using the content analysis technique for the survey and the Atlas.ti computer program for the interview. In this way, qualitative matrices were created with a methodological triangulation method to analyze the results. Regarding the results, there are evidences of situations, habits, attitudes and behaviors that problematize the academic and behavioral performance of the participants related to their executive functions. Regarding the conclusions, the implications of implementing a comprehensive pedagogical strategy within the classroom to strengthen the executive functions of working memory, inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility in students in teaching-learning processes are exposed.
