Resumen
Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis is caused by a rickettsial bacterium, Ehrlichia canis, which is distributed throughout the world, having a special affinity for tropical and subtropical regions in the different countries where it is distributed, affecting carnivores, especially companion dogs and some wild. In this review, the objective was to identify, through the epidemiological and genetic characterization aspects, the relevance of acquiring more in-depth knowledge about the new strains of E. canis and also the therapeutic and preventive medicine alternatives that are presented throughout of the different studies in recent years, discussing the implications for the health of domestic animals, humans and the conservation and control of wildlife, to avoid the sources of transmission of the disease, concluding the importance of acquiring said knowledge about the distribution and genetic variability of E. canis in clinical practice at the national level with international references.
