Resumen
Summary: the consumption of tobacco or alcohol deteriorates health, increasing morbidity; this is associated with the presentation of cardiovascular diseases. Objective: to determine the cardiovascular risk associated with tobacco and alcohol consumption in a community of Santa Marta. Materials and methods: correlational cross-sectional study. From a captive population of 310 inhabitants aged between 18-88 years, a deliberate sample of 157 people with cardiovascular risk was selected, who reported the consumption of alcohol and tobacco. The stepwise instrument was used. Odds ratio (or) for cardiovascular risk associated with tobacco or alcohol consumption were established. Results: the sample (n = 157) reported the consumption of tobacco or alcohol. Likewise, 1% (n = 2) presented bmi ≥25, while 99% (n = 155) presented bmi ≥30. High blood pressure figures> 140 / 90mmhg were only present in 4% (n = 6) of the sample. The cardiovascular risk estimate associated with tobacco or alcohol consumption was statistically significant for previously diagnosed hypertension and tobacco use at some period (or, 5,040; 95% ci, 2,312 to 10,985). Alcohol consumption was found to be statistically significant as a protection factor against the presentation of diabetes (or, 0.935; 95% ci, 0.896 to 0.975). Conclusion: a 5 times higher risk was established in individuals who used tobacco daily during some period of their life for presenting high blood pressure. although some studies suggest that alcohol consumption reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, this association as a protection factor should be taken with caution and should be studied in greater depth.
