Resumen
This study was the product of a research on the Master's Degree in Learning Difficulties, belonging to the Faculty of Education of the Cooperative University of Colombia (UCC), Bogotá. Its general objective: to determine differentiated teaching strategies that contribute to the development of communicative skills in second and third grade elementary students with low performance in English from New England School. Therefore, it is necessary to take into consideration the importance of teachers, their pedagogical elements in language acquisition processes, and the way they affect students' academic performance. Thus, differentiated instruction was the main construct and the transversal axis from which fundamental categories were derived from the concepts: communicative competence, pedagogical practice, learning styles and motivation, which guided the research work. The paradigm that guided this research was qualitative, because it allowed interpreting the interactions of subjects in their teaching-learning processes. The research-action approach was used because the causes and consequences of the problem were investigated and actions could be generated that would allow for a solution. The research study was descriptive because it sought to outline the characteristics of the problem. The target population were 24 students and 4 teachers of English, to whom the following techniques were applied: document review, observation card for students and teachers, test and interview. The most important results were: teachers make use of a holistic methodology, variety of didactic and technological resources, and lack of knowledge in the application of differentiated teaching strategies. The main conclusion: teachers are aware of the importance of having an appropriation of specific strategies on differentiated instruction, bearing in mind that there is a lack of knowledge on the subject. A pedagogical proposal called "Overcoming obstacles" was designed based on the principles of the differentiated instruction in order to contribute to the teaching practicum of English teachers.
