The aging of the population is the product of change demographic and current epidemiological, in addition to the decrease of mortality, the decline in birth and the increase in life expectancy. Organizations report that the proportion of the world's population equal or over 60 years in the period 2000-2050 will double, and 11% will go to 22%. Consequently, the number of adults in that age range is increased from 900 million to 1400 in the period between 2015 and 2030. Unfortunately, this figure will continue to increase as World Health Organization. Between the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, population growth older adult will be a common feature and will occur faster than in developed countries. Colombia is currently going through a transition process demographic, which is explained because birth rates have declined and mortality figures may Be moderate or low. The growth of the proportion of older adults, the increase in life expectancy, the reduction of birth rates and changes in family, social and economic dynamics have favored the institutionalization of the elderly. It is prevailing to promote preventive actions that contribute to knowledge of individual characteristics and the current needs not only of the elderly, but also from their families. That is why this manual is intended offer basic knowledge about the evaluation psychological of the elderly and can be useful for support the training of students who are linked to care for the elderly in the different modalities of research and training practices offered in the College.
