Resumen
In order to improve the productive characteristics of Colombian hair sheep (OPC), these sheep are crossbred with breeds specialized in one or several of the desirable traits that can be inherited to their descendants. The aim of the present study was to compare the productive characteristics of the OPC and their crossing with Katahdin and Santa Ines looking for a maternal sheep line that adequately supports the crossing with a meat breed. 175 OPC females constituted the maternal race. A male Katahdin and a male Santa Ines were chosen among 10 males of each breed for presenting good morphometric, phenotypic characteristics and being the best in the andrological evaluation. 96 OPC females were synchronized and inseminated with semen of the male Katahdin, while 27 were subjected to natural service by the same male of the Katahdin breed. 52 females were paired with the male Santa Inés. The variables analyzed were number of offspring, weight at birth, height and weight at weaning. The data collected were compared with the records of 174 OPC females natural service by OPC males. The prolificacy showed no statistical difference between the three crosses OPCxOPC, KxOPC and SIxOPC. The highest weight at birth was found at the SIxOPC crossing, followed by the KxOPC crossing, but no differences were found between these crosses. The highest weaning weight was from the KxOPC crossing, followed by the SIxOPC crossing, but there is no statistical difference between these crosses. Among the female offspring, the greatest weight at birth was the KxOPC cross, which present statistical difference with respect to the weight of the OPCxOPC and SIxOPC crosses. The highest height was from the SIxOPC crossing, followed by the KxOPC crossing, but without statistical difference between these crosses. The female offspring of the KxOPC cross presented the highest weight at weaning. When comparing the birth weight of the female offspring of the KxOPC and SIxOPC crosses in natural service, statistical differences were found with better results found in the KxOPC cross. In conclusion, the crossings made with breeds specialized in meat production did improve the productive characteristics of Colombian hair sheep.
