Resumen
This investigation is intended to determine the characterization of four sub-sectors of the tourism sector such as handicrafts, hotels, restaurants and travel agencies, allowing the identification of significant variables, as well as to contribute to the development of the macro project Impact of Association in the Competitiveness of Latin American Enterprises created by the Cooperative University of Colombia, Ibagué campus. In the City of Ibagué the tourist part has presented growths in the operativity of its activities and it is evidenced in the growth of the offers and the creations of new companies that develop activities related to the sector; this investigation was of mixed approach because it understood qualitative variables that allowed the description of the characteristics of the tourist sector by means of the search in different sources of data bases, and quantitative because an instrument of data collection was applied by means of which the most representative characteristics of the companies in the city of Ibagué Colombia could be identified. For the sample resulting from the application of a formula described below, there are 471 companies to which the instrument was applied. The results show that between 2000 and 2004, 29.22% of the companies had their constitution, 81.28% of the companies develop economic activities to provide services, 95.43% of the companies sell their products and services present the final consumer as the type of client.
