Resumen
Periodontal disease is a multifactor inflammatory disease, according to the American Periodontics Association, gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease, where the gums become red, swollen and bleed easily, usually there is little or no discomfort in this state, it is often caused by improper oral hygiene. According to the World Health Organization, depression is a mental disorder characterized by depressed mood, loss of interest, guilt, sleep or disturbed appetite. An observational, cross-sectional and descriptive study was carried out to relate the trait state depression and stressful life events with periodontal disease, the sample was 201 patients from the dental clinic of the Cooperative University of Colombia. The results demonstrated that the IDERE Risk Depression / Status inventory is suitable for use in its two components of euthymia and dysthymia. The tendency of trait and state depression are similar for a high level in the sample. The relationship of prevalence of periodontal disease and symptoms of depression State / Trait was presented differently in men and women. While the frequency of periodontal disease was higher in men with symptoms of depression State, in women it was in Trait. Stressful life events are related to periodontal disease, especially in its initial stages.
