History of the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia: 1958-2008 Four and a half decades of progress The Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia is an educational reality that began to take shape in 1958 at the M. M. Coady Institute of Education and Cooperative Training. Social reason that paid tribute to a Canadian educator pioneer of a movement that promoted "Adult education based on economic cooperation." The institute taught subjects such as history and cooperative doctrines, administration, legislation and accounting especially in the night shift. His first director and leader of the initiative was Rymel Serrano lawyer of the National University who summoned as teachers important cooperative leaders among them, Augusto Arbeláez, Carlos Julio Niño, José Joaquín Rojas, María Cristina Salazar, José Levy Vargas, Héctor Restrepo Valencia and Carlos Uribe Garzón. In 1961 the institute was reorganized under the name of "Institute of Social Economy and Cooperativism (Indesco)" with four academic units: the Faculty of Social Economy, the School of Technical Experts, the Specialization Center and the Research and Extension Center. He started work in the city of Bucaramanga, later opened activities in Bogotá, where he worked as << Cooperative Education Center >> later branches were opened in Medellín, Barrancabermeja, Barranquilla and Cali. The official operating license was achieved through Resolution No. 4156 of November 7, 1964, issued by the Ministry of National Education, a norm that opened the way for technological or intermediate training in Colombia and, at the same time, by recognizing the institute as a higher education establishment, was allowed to grant degrees in Social Economy, Cooperative Administration and Community Development. In 1968 it was recognized by the National Superintendence of Cooperatives as an Auxiliary Institution of Cooperativism, according to resolution No. 00559. Subsequently, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation was linked to the project, which strengthened the finances and expanded its development horizons. His participation in turn required a restructuring and that is why his director transferred the property right to the National Cooperative Union, Uconal, which called on other cooperative organizations of higher grade to participate in the property of Indesco. This led to the entry of Coopdesarrollo, Ascoop, Cecora, Financiacoop, Cencoa and Ucopan. It was already the beginning of the decade of the seventies and at that time begin to emerge the headquarters of Medellin, Bucaramanga, Barrancabermeja, Cali (which was later suppressed) and Barranquilla.
