Resumen
Now a days there is a clear consensus regarding the importance of investments the firms must make in order to properly store the high amount of information they produce. The actually well known: “knowledge society” induces firms to produce a lot of data at an increasing rate. That amount of data must be conveniently and safely store if firms want to keep their competitive advantage in actual markets and to turn out that data inot valuable information. Maintaining an adequate and efficient information management policy will allow firms also to efficiently manage their processes, analyse their costumers behaviours, explore new market niches and track their actual and potential customers. Considering the previous facts, and as expressed by (Solis, 2012), the non-structured growing data process is one of the IT priority tendencies that organizations must pay attention to in the short time, if their interest is to explore and exploit valued information within and outside firms. This is the particular case of the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia, at their under- graduate program: of Computer Science Engineering. Within this program, the students might complete a research Project in order to get their diploma. Those research works follow a life-cycle which includes the presentation of the research subject, the presentation of the ex.ante project, the subsequent revisions by the evaluators, the final presentation in front of the members of the thesis tribunal and the assignation of the final grade. Before the beginning of this project, all the information related to this research project lyfe- cycle, although highly valued, was spread out in different sources, non-structured, and was consequentlyambiguous and non reliable. With this project, though, we aimed at apply a data mining process in order to collect all the spread data, give the data an structured and regular form, compile 5-year historical information and fill the structured data base with it. Consequently, some of the main results of this research are: a fully normalized and structured data base, filled with 5-year historical information regarding the life-cycle of undergraduate projects at the Computer Sciencie Engineering Program; a basic interface that allows the general maintenance of the data base.
