Resumen
In Colombia, university students do not resort mostly to contraceptive methods, motivated by the imaginaries that exist around their use and adverse effects. Objective Identify the knowledge, attitudes and practices on the use of contraceptive methods in students of a university in Colombia. Materials and methods Research of descriptive type, quantitative approach, cross-section, non-experimental design. The population corresponded to 435 nursing students of the Cooperative University of Colombia, Santa Marta section; the sample was 204 students. Sampling is randomized stratified provided by levels. Results Young people have knowledge about the methods, but the practices are not the most appropriate. Similarly, the attitude was oriented by the adverse effects of the methods, usually due to misuse, or motivated by the influence of friends, many of whom also did not attend health centers. Conclusions Until an effective, formal and appropriate education and training of this subject doesn’t carry out, both in the school and in the university institutions, these young people expose their future patients and themselves to a risk on their sexual and reproductive health.
