During the last few years, pain control has become an important area of research in veterinary medicine which is why new ways of treating pain have been explored. The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP, International Association for the Study of Pain) has defined pain as; the unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with a real or potential tissue injury, or described in terms of that injury. But not only the management of pain is the problem since the assessment of pain is complex because of its subjective and interpretative component by the evaluator, that is why it is necessary to use assessment methods such as pain scales.In the small animals veterinary clinic, one of the main problems is not knowing the degree of pain, in order to implement a pre and post operative analgesic treatment. Due to this, the objective of the present study is to develop and implement a protocol for the management of pre and post operative pain in canine patients with orthopedic surgeries at the small animals veterinary clinic. The study unit was made up of 20 patients who consulted the clinic for orthopedic procedures, which were divided into two groups (control group and protocol group) both were given two different treatments to evaluate the results, for the control group was implemented the treatment used frequently in the clinic, and the protocol group implemented a treatment for the management of preoperative pain and infusions of ketamine + lidocaine for the postoperative period. During the study period it was found that with the implementation of the protocol the animals showed a significant improvement in the pain levels observed in the two groups evaluated. For the physiological constants it was observed that the protocol group had values closer to those considered normal after 2, 8, 12 and 24 hours after the surgical intervention. According to the results, it was observed that the proposed protocol decreased pain levels in the patients undergoing surgery with faster recoveries and fewer post-operative complications.
