Resumen
In the early 60's, mothers of children with mental retardation did not have the support and guidance necessary to advance the mission of ensuring that their children and family members had a clear educational and occupational expectation that would make them happy and full of life. . In 1964 one of these mothers, Beatriz Ramírez de Cubillos, inspired by the Rose Kennedy Center in New Jersey, convened a press release to mothers and friends who were in the same situation, in order to hold a meeting to promote the search for solutions to the increasingly urgent and growing medical, therapeutic and educational needs of these children. This bold call had a resounding success to be widely answered by a large group of stakeholders. This is how the Mya Center, Mothers and Friends of the Child with Special Educational Needs pioneer in their field in Colombia and Latin America originated. The initial work was very hard: Leonor Duran de Serrano, Ilva Alarcon de Valencia, Beatriz Ramírez de Cubillos, Rosa Vega de Tarazona and Emma González de Buitrago, as founders, accompanied by their husbands and relatives, among them, Carlos Arturo Tarazona, Adolfo Serrano Durán, Luis Buitrago Riveros, Daniel Cubillos Amaya stood out with great devotion and dedication their strength and valuable time to the daily accompaniment of therapeutic activities and recreational activities for the benefit of their children, family, friends, children, youth and adults with cognitive impairment.
