The present investigation focuses on the activities of daily life (AVD) in institutionalized older adults, which has shown that there is a minimum theoretical approach. Objective: To analyze the activities of the daily life of institutionalized older adults in the Colombian Caribbean coast. Methodology: Is quantitative, non-experimental type of descriptive and transversal scope. The sample was constituted by 47 adults of whom 23 participants are women and 24 are men belonging to 4 geriatric institutes deprived of the Caribbean coast of the cities of Barranquilla and Cartagena, whose ages comprise from the 58 years Until 92 years. The instrument used to evaluate the AVD was the Katz index. Results: 22 participants classified as independent persons (I); the minor and moderate dependency scales are represented by 9 people and; the participants who scored with severe dependency were 16. It was evident that the ages where more participants predominate were between 68 – 72 and 84 – 89 years in the category of independents. It could be seen that in relation to sex they do not present differences in the categories independence or in severe dependence. Whereas, if there are differences in daily life activities between men and women when the level is mild or moderate. Conclusion: Throughout the study of older adults in geriatric institutions visited, there is a need for interventions focused on stimulating these areas to promote and potentiate their autonomy.
