To this end, a study with a qualitative approach was designed that had two components: the analysis of the literature and the application of interviews among personnel of three MSMEs from Barranquilla. The results made it possible to identify that companies face exogenous challenges such as insufficient public policies for exports, high costs for international logistics operations, little visibility of production outside the hydrocarbon sector and infrastructure with shortcomings. Endogenous challenges include the lack of willingness to join unions with a view to internationalization, little export interest, financial and technological weaknesses and, mainly, the production of goods that are not very competitive internationally. These results show the need to structure much more efficient production processes that respond to the issues involved, for which there must be joint collaboration between the State and MSMEs, the latter being ultimately responsible for their growth.
