Concerns regarding strategies to improve the academic performance of students go beyond schools, involving families, society and officials in charge of establishing education policies in the Colombian territory. In this context, the pedagogic strategy "TODOS SOMOS UNO" or "all of us are one" includes an intervention program addressed to the students of a public school in the rural area of Berlin, town of Tona, Santander, as well as their families and their teachers.
We proposed to combine the pedagogic actions carried on by the school with those carried on by teachers, parents and students; since each of these parts has an effective role to play in minimizing the negative impact of factors associated with the poor academic performance of students.
To achieve this objective, the methodology known as communitarian education is applied. This methodology focuses on the active participation of the whole community in the analysis of the problem and the decision-making process intended to the development of concrete actions to review and update school curriculums and improve school policies, the aim is to empower both students and families in their paramount role in this process; targeting the improvement of the student academic performance.
The strategy comprises three phases:
1. Participative diagnosis: through focus groups, participants reflect on the problem and its magnitude. 2. Design of activities: based on the previous diagnosis, specific activities for each of the participant groups are designed, these activities intend to address the factors responsible for the poor academic performance of the students. 3. Evaluations: each participant group holds specific evaluations sessions with an educational approach.
The final product of this proposal is the design and implementation of specific curriculums, classroom plans and continuous evaluations; promoting the development of better pedagogic practices and optimal learning environments therefore allowing the students to achieve academic success.
