Resumen
Objective. Test the effectiveness of a Instructive Educational Multimedia (IPM) and the practices of brushing to improve oral hygiene in patients with hearing disability. Methods. 42 deaf children aged 5 and 17 years old were included; fulfilling national and international standards on bioethics. All parents were surveyed about oral hygiene practices of their children. The initial Bacterial Plaque Index (IPB) of children (O'Leary) was taken. This initial IPM was designed and introduced to children, parents or guardians and teachers. Six months later a new IPB control was performed and reapplied the survey. The average of plaque and frequency of daily use of oral hygiene techniques using parametric statistical tests ( t- paired samples) and the percentages of practice of oral hygiene were compared before and after the intervention with Chi2 test wiht Yates correction (α <0.05). The survey was validated (consistency Cronbach alpha 0.82). The examiners were calibrates by Clinical expert, accepting Kappa values> 80% for both inter and intra-examiner. SPSS 21.0 university license was used. Results. The frequency of brushing, increased by 35.7%. The average of mouthwash use changed from 0.33 to 1 time per day, the bacterial plaque index (IPB) decreased from 45.3% to 20.6% (p <0.05). Conclusion. It was possible to test the effectiveness of IPM designed to improve oral hygiene in patients with hearing disability
